Ascenders
From CanyonWiki
alroelcbota There are a variety of ascending tools that slide up the rope a little better than a Prusik or Bachman knot. Whatever you choose to use, try it out at your local crag before finding yourself stuck in a hole.
[edit] Favorite Canyon Ascenders
Instead of debating the merits of each system, you should train yourself to ascend in as many ways possible and decide for yourself: first, what your preferred technique is and second, what you think you need so you are prepared for unanticipated events. What happens if you've loaned your shunt to someone in order to set up a guided rappel? Did you forget your tibloc? Can you now ascend with a Prusik, Bachman, or Klemheist? As with all things canyoneering, more knowledge increases your safety margin.
[edit] Rigging a Figure 8 as Ascender
- Clip HMS carabiner to harness and large hole in Figure 8.
- Pull up a bight through the large hole.
- Put a half twist in the bight.
- Flip the bight over the small loop of the Figure 8.
- The anchor line should pinch the brake line against the neck when weighted.
- Rig a Prusik knot or another ascender above the Figure 8 and tie a foot loop to it.
- This should form a simple Texas prusik style ascender system.
