Carabiner Brake
From CanyonWiki
The carabiner brake is a backup rappel system that is a useful part of any canyoneering toolbox.
It consists of four carabiners. Fewer can be used if locking carabiners are used, although this gives less friction. It can be rigged for either single- or double-strand rappel.
- Clip two utility carabiners with gates in opposition to an HMS carabiner on your harness (not shown).
- Lock the HMS carabiner
- Pull a loop of rope through the two carabiners in opposition.
- Clip a third carabiner on the loop and the anchor line with the loop running over the spine.
- Clip a fourth carabiner in reverse to the third.
- Slide the third and fourth carabiners down over the first and second.
- Rappel using the lower line as a brake by pulling it taut against the first and second carabiners.
