[edit] Static Ropes

Canyoneers use Static ropes. These ropes are not designed to stretch, and are able to take a very heavy load. It would be a big mistake to use a dynamic rope when rappelling through a canyon and then to go climbing on it. Sand will damage the core of the dynamic rope and it will not respond well to dynamic loads anymore.

[edit] Dynamic Ropes

Dynamic Ropes are designed to stretch on impact. They are used in rock climbing.

They are not the best thing to use for canyoneering, but many people start canyoneering with retired climbing ropes. Static ropes will make the rappelling and rope pulls easier, and nylon rockclimbing ropes absorb a lot more water than polyester canyoneering ropes.

In addition, canyoneering will ruin your dynamic climbing rope. Canyoneering is very hard on ropes, and works sand into the core. Do not use a rope you have canyoneered on for rock climbing - consider it retired.
