The jargon of canyon coolness.

  • Beta (USA): information relevant to a canyon's condition, route, or to a technique. From Betamax, and an article in Rock and Ice Magazine by Neil Cannon, circa 1987.
  • Bomb bay (USA): A Mae West Canyon that opens up underneath.
  • Kelsey Exit : an exit marked in one of Kelsey's books. May be a brilliant exit from a canyon with few exits; may be a dangerous and as-yet untired potential escape route.
  • Li-loing (Oz): To float on an air mattress or small raft down-canyon.
  • Mae West Slot (USA): A canyon too narrow to enter. It must be chimneyed or stemmed (or Mae Wested) well off the ground. A true Mae West section must also be a bomb bay.
  • Mae West Bunny Strap : a strap for dangling one's pack, while Mae Westing in canyons.
  • Martin Lawrence Section : A long stretch of dry canyon done whilst wearing a wet suit (actor Martin Lawrence was hospitalized for kindney failure after jogging around LA whilst wearing a wetsuit) -Note although this term has it's origins in Australia it is an international term
  • Meat Anchor: using a human as part of an anchor.
  • Sally Style (Oz) : Wearing your wetsuit on the approach or exit of a canyon, usually from or to the car (or both). Eg. The entrance to Pine Creek can be done 'Sally Style'
  • Silo : in a Mae West slot, a roundish widening of the canyon, often difficult to cross.
  • Truck (USA): a very solid anchor--ie able to hold a truck. Synonym to bomb-proof.
