Pull Cord
From CanyonWiki
A pull cord is a means of lightening your load. It is usually a thinner line, say 6mm, and is not really suitable for rappelling. However, it can be used for rope retrieval.
[edit] Instructions
- Set anchor
- Rig rappel rope with 'biner block
- Tie pull cord into blocked side of the rappel rope.
- Throw rappel rope and pull cord.
- Rappel single stranded on rappel rope.
- Once down, pull the pull cord.
- The block should come down as the rappel line travels up, through the anchor and back to you.
- Now you're on your way.
Say you are doing Pine Creek at Zion National Park. Most drops are pretty short except the last one. You could carry a 200' 8mm rappel rope and a 200' 6mm pull cord. This shaves off a couple pounds from the team gear. If the rope is in a rope bag, you can accomplish each drop by feeding out only what you need. When you get to the last drop, pull out the light-weight pull cord for rope retrieval. This is fine, except you have less redundancy in your rack. Should you stick your single rope, well, then you're really stuck.
