Rope Bag

Rope bags can make a significant difference in rope handling.

Static lines are difficult to coil and tend to form horrible rat's nests. Rope bags improve this.

Rope bags are especially useful in canyons with short drops.

  • Feed the rope through the rapide.
  • Pull out enough rope to reach the bottom.
  • Set a contingency anchor if you're not sure the rope reaches the bottom, if the rappel or landing are in moving water, or if there's any chance of anything going wrong.
  • Set a 'biner block if you'd like (block the rope bag side) or rap double stranded.
  • Toss the rope bag and rappel or rappel with the rope bag attached to your harness.
  • Once down pull the rope from the anchor and stuff it back into the bag.
  • You didn't have to uncoil and recoil the entire rope. Wasn't that nice?
    • Hint - if you toss the bag into moving water, you'd better have the rope tied in somewhere or the entire rope may uncoil and the bag may float away downstream. Bummer dude.

You can buy a nice rope bag from Imlay or make your own.
