Canyoneering takes a lot of energy. If things get cold, warmth requires fuel. Feel free to add useful recipes.

[edit] Home-made energy bar

[edit] Ingredients

  • 1 cup corn syrup
  • 1-1½ tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup crunchy peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon KCl (salt substitute)
  • 1 cup protein powder (available at health food stores)
  • 2-3 cups oats (enough to make appropriate consistency)
  • Chocolate chips and Marshmallows

[edit] Steps to make

  1. Thoroughly mix everything but the oats, chocolate chips and marshmallows.
  2. Add oats until you get a stiff consistency.
  3. Add chocolate chips and marshmallows to taste and fold them in.
  4. Press mixture out on a piece of Saran-wrap on a cookie sheet.
  5. Dust with quick oats to absorb moisture on surface.
  6. Refrigerate 1+ hrs and cut into bars to keep in plastic bags.

Bars keep best if refrigerated.

[edit] GORP

Mix your favorite:

  • granola
  • oatmeal
  • raisens
  • peanuts (or other nuts of your choice)
  • M&M's
  • dried cranberries.

[edit] Easy Camp-Omlett

A good breakfast can make a long day in a canyon much more tolerable. Here is an easy way to make a nice four, or five-egg omlet on the trail. You will have to be able to boil water - and you will need a pot big enough to put the thing in. A small cooking pot and a nice backpacking stove work well for this.

[edit] Ingredients

  • 4 or 5 eggs (or more if you are a big eater)
  • 1 cup of Cheddar cheese (or more, or less)
  • 1/3 cup of chopped ham (or whatever you want)
  • Dash of pepper
  • 1 Zip-Lock Freezer bag

Optional

  • Peppers, onions, whatever you want to put in it

[edit] Instructions

  1. Start water boiling
  2. While water is boiling, put eggs, cheese, and all other ingredients into the zip-lock bag. Seal it.
  3. Place bag in water
  4. Let it cook until the eggs are done.
  5. Eat.

[edit] Tips

Use only one bag. Sometimes people try to double-bag this. Don't. The bag will float at the egg level naturally if you use only one bag - and they will cook much faster this way. You can cook several at a time (as many as your pot will fit!). Bring a disposable fork and eat directly out of the bag. Add a banana for a pretty decent canyoneering breakfast! (Much better than a granola bar in the morning... that's for sure.)
