Generally, webbing is flat and anywhere from 1/2 inch to 3 inches wide. In Canyoneering, webbing with a width of about an inch is the most commonly used. When you purchase webbing, you will generally do so by a linear measurement (in the United States you buy it by the foot).

When abandoning webbing, be aware that the canyoneering community makes a concious effort to use natural-colors on permanent anchors. Some people are very annoyed to see a bright red piece of webbing in the middle of the desert setting. If you are not one of those people, please be considerate of them and use light brown webbing near sandstone, or dark green webbing in mossy areas.

When webbing is permanently sewed into a loop, it is known as a sling.
